Vintage Secrets: Hollywood Beauty (Review)

Since I was a little girl I’ve had a fascination with vintage Hollywood stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth and Bette Davis. When I was offered the chance to review a book about their glamour and beauty secrets I was obviously intrigued!

I’m pleased to say that Laura Slater’s ‘Vintage Secrets: Hollywood Beauty' published by Plexus Books, does not disappoint. I pretty much read it form cover to cover in one sitting! It has everything you need to know to create the vintage looks of the Golden Age stars at home…

Vintage Secrets: Hollywood Beauty

The book is split into two main sections – Makeup and Hair. It includes handy step-by-step guides, not only from the stars themselves but also from the biggest names in makeup history, like Wally Westmore and Max Factor.

One of my favourite sections of the book explains Westmore’s infamous Seven Face Shapes rule. He once said, “Most women don’t realize that they make a mistake being fashionable, unless the fashion suits their face.” I have heard about this rule before but never in such detail.

I was especially pleased to find a page on ‘How To Use Cake Mascara,’ since I purchased a tin from Besame Cosmetics a while back and just couldn’t figure it out! Now I have no problem applying it, thanks to the easy to follow guide. I also tried experimenting with my favourite Besame Lipstick, following the steps on ‘Painting Perfect Lips’.

From choosing a colour palette to suit your complexion to perfect eyebrow shaping to mimicking Grace Kelly’s classic chignon hair, ‘Vintage Secrets: Hollywood Beauty' ensures no beauty stone is left unturned.

I was super excited when I reached the Hair section. If you’re like me and get bored with the same old hair-do every day, there are plenty of iconic style tips to keep you on your toes. As Ginger Rogers put it, “A dowdy, untidy hair-dress is bad enough in every day life, but on the screen it simply isn’t tolerated.” Now I may not be a movie star, but I’m a firm believer in a strong hairstyle when I leave the house.

I just love Veronica Lake’s Home Hair Treatments, featuring melted butter, double brushing and ten-minute head massages! There are also tips for coloured hair, creating marcel waves and pin curls, and how to accessorise.

In a nutshell, this book reveals everything you need to know to be the Hollywood Goddess you know you are!

I now can’t wait to pick up a copy of Laura Slater’s other book ‘Vintage Secrets: Hollywood Diet and Fitness.’ Both books are available here.
